Emmaus Haarzuilens

Emmaus Haarzuilens is a residential work community that provides a home for people with diverse needs. The community generates income through thrift stores, to which every resident of Emmaus contributes, along with numerous volunteers. Located in Haarzuilens, a suburb of Utrecht in the Netherlands, Emmaus Haarzuilens is an integral part of the international Emmaus movement. It is the Emmaus Movement’s first living-working community in the Netherlands, and in the years since, several more have been added.

Even though the residents work at the Emmaus Foundation thrift store or are involved in community activities within the facility, they maintain a strong connection to the community. They actively interact with each other, not only within the immediate surrounding area but also throughout the larger city and regional areas. The presence of one of the largest thrift stores in the Netherlands further extends this reach. Although open only on Wednesdays, the store attracts hundreds of visitors and is a vibrant hub for the community. The store is of great importance to the neighbourhood and embodies a vibrant and popular community place. Volunteers from the village and surrounding areas actively participate, making Emmaus Haarzuilens’ thrift store one of the most sought-after and beloved in the country.

As part of the two-year WISH-EU Project, Prison Insider developed an interactive map that visualizes a database of detention facilities from various European regions. Throughout this European-funded project, we identified and visited over 40 good practices that apply one or more of the following principles: small-scale, differentiation and community-integration. Since then, RESCALED has continued to identify and visit practices whose stories can inspire us to drive systemic change. We have further developed the map to include various filters and detailed reports so you can get to know these inspirational practices!
